Mamun

Abbasid caliph (qq.v.) from 813-833; son of Harun al-Rashid (q.v.). He supported the revolt of Thomas the Slav (q.v.) and invaded Asia Minor (q.v.) three times during the reign of Theophilos (q.v.): in 830 in response to Theophilos's (q.v.) support of the Khurramites (q.v.), in 831, and in 833. He collected and translated into Arabic many ancient Greek scientific texts, but his effort to persuade Leo the Mathematician (q.v.) to come to Baghdad (qq.v.) on a cultural mission was unsuccessful. He died in 833 while invading Asia Minor. Mutasim (q.v.) succeeded him.
